About Us
The Institute for Niger Delta Studies (INDS) is a multi-disciplinary academic unit and research institute within the Niger Delta University originally established as the Centre for Niger Delta Studies (CNDS) by the Niger Delta University Law 2000 (as amended in 2018). The INDS is dedicated to the study of the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria and the Institute’s key objective is contribute to development and enhanced human dignity in the region by stimulating interest in, and promoting understanding of the peoples and issues of the Niger Delta through research, advocacy and capacity building. The INDS is thus, a transformatory institute chartered by its enabling law to promote development and advance the rights, dignity and overall wellbeing of the Niger Delta and its peoples by facilitating multi-dimensional region-focused research, learning and communication.
Mission
To undertake research, related academic and advocacy activities to enhance and deepen general understanding of the Niger Delta region, including its development challenges in order to contribute to a realisation of the overall wellbeing of the region and a restoration of the dignity of its peoples.
Vision
To be a globally acclaimed focal point and centre of excellence for interdisciplinary research, innovative study, inclusive dialogue and constructive advocacy on the Niger Delta and its diverse issues.

Governance Structure
INDS is governed by a Board of Management (the Board) under the Chairmanship of the Vice
Chancellor of the Niger Delta University and administered by a Management Committee
under the leadership of the Director.

Research Areas
The INDS is mandated to undertake research in the following core areas:
• History, Languages and Cultures of the Niger Delta and its peoples
• Management and Conservation of the Forest and Marine Resources of the Niger Delta
• Flooding and erosion problems in the Niger Delta
• Pollution and other environmental Issues of the Niger Delta
• Peace, Justice and Human Rights in the Niger Delta -
Key Initiatives
• Since its establishment, the INDS (with the support of the Bayelsa State Government) has promoted the teaching and learning of languages of the Niger Delta including Ijaw languages such Epie, Kolokuma, Mein, and Nembe through the training and certification of language teachers as well as the publication of text books and other teaching aids for schools.
• INDS has been the convenor of the Bayelsa State Conflict Management Alliance since 2014, and has been involved in the management of a number of budding and existing conflicts in the region as well as one of the drivers of legislation to tackle herders - farmers potential conflict in Bayelsa State.
• The Institute hosts an interdisciplinary research journal (supported by the Tertiary Institutions Trust Fund) that focuses on the Niger Delta. Over 60 articles and research reports have been published on this platform.
• INDS also hosts international and national conferences, seminars and workshops on issues within its research mandates including conferences on the impact of climate change on the Niger Delta; Environmental Justice in the Niger Delta etc
• The Institute collaborates with various governmental and non-governmental bodies, academic institutions, civil society and community based organisation, interventionist agencies and think-tanks for the purpose of shaping policies and strategies relating to the Niger Delta

To realise its instructional objectives, INDS currently has programmes for students at various levels. Educational programmes of the Institute are aimed at equipping our students for valuable contribution to society as capable researchers. In addition to the general educational courses on offer, Senior Researchers and Researchers at INDS are available to supervise graduate students at the Masters and PhD levels in tailor-made courses, subject to the availability of funding. Partners and stakeholders may also fund or sponsor specially designed, tailor-made courses relevant to the regional and academic interests of INDS.
Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Conflict, Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS)
This course is a general programme of study designed to provide top-notch training opportunities in Conflict, Peace and Strategic Studies for professionals in relevant disciplines and graduates of CPSS who otherwise would not qualify got admission for the Masters degree in CPSS and other related courses. The Course runs for a maximum of two semesters and a maximum of four semesters. Admission enquiries can be made to the INDS or the Postgraduate School of the Niger Delta Studies.
Masters in Science (MSc) in Conflict, Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS)
The MSc in CPSS is a general programme of study targeted at holders of the Bachelor of Sciences (BSc) degree in CPSS or related social sciences with a minimum of a second-class lower division, already in or interested in pursuing professional careers in conflict management, peace-building and strategic activities in the private or public sectors. The course runs for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of six semesters. Admission enquiries can be made to the INDS or the Postgraduate School of the Niger Delta Studies.

The Oloibiri Conversations
Annual public seminar at which themes and issues related to oil and gas exploration and exploitation activities in the Niger Delta are discussed on the anniversary of the discovery of oil in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, present day Bayelsa State.

Bayelsa State Conflict Management Alliance (BSCMA)
The INDS is the convenor and acts as the Secretariat of this initiative, an umbrella platform for traditional and community leaders, security organisations, civil society organisations, farmers, herders and other stakeholders for addressing security and related issues arising from climate change etc in Bayelsa State.
